Thank you for sharing your reading knowledge. I didn't realise that the wood from the Totara tree was mainly used for Maori carvings. I had always assumed it was Kauri, hence it's status as being an indigenous tree in Aotearoa.
I remember reading the Maori legend of Rata and the tree when I was at school. I wonder, do you think that it is possible that it really happened as the legend says, animals and insects resurrecting the tree?
